An average person spends a third of their life in bed. During this time, accidents are bound to happen. Urine on a mattress cover isn’t as uncommon as you may think. Every family faces this unpleasant but completely fixable problem every once in a while.
The key to handling it seamlessly is knowing how to react.

If you are buying one of our custom mattresses in Sarasota, FL, we have custom-made mattress covers for them as well. Not only are they made with the same standard as our mattresses, but they are much easier to clean as well!
Let’s take a closer look at the professional secrets of mattress cover cleaning.
Why a Mattress Cover Is Important to protect against Urine
A mattress cover serves as a protective barrier between you and your mattress. It creates a fresh and clean environment while reducing the need for extensive mattress maintenance.
Protection against Stains and Spills
A mattress cover prevents any liquids or substances from seeping into your mattress. It forms a waterproof barrier, keeping your bed free from unsightly and smelly stains.
Allergen and Dust Mite Defense
Over time, mattresses can accumulate allergens, dust mites, and other microscopic particles. A mattress cover with hypoallergenic properties acts as a protective layer, preventing these allergens from penetrating the mattress.
This is particularly beneficial if you have allergies or respiratory problems.
Extended Mattress Lifespan against Pee
A mattress cover can help extend the lifespan of your mattress by shielding it from wear and tear, spills, and stains. It acts as a barrier against elements that damage the mattress over time.
Easy Maintenance and Cleaning
Mattress covers are machine washable, so you can throw them into the laundry together with the linens. Instead of attempting to clean the entire mattress, which can be a challenging and costly task, you can simply wash the cover.
What You’ll Need to Get Started for a Clean Mattress
Mattress cover cleaning doesn’t have to be complicated. To do it, you will need:
- 8 ounces of hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle
- Clean towels
- Cold water
- Detergent
The key to getting urine out of a mattress cover is acting fast. The faster you handle the problem, the more chances you have to avoid unpleasant yellow spots.
How to Remove Pee from Your Mattress Cover
Here are four simple steps to take after an accident happens:
Step #1: Remove the Mattress Cover
Remove all the bedding from your mattress. Put sheets, comforter, and anything else affected by the stain in the washer. While your washing machine is doing its job, spread the mattress cover on the floor or in the bathtub.
Step 2: Blot the Affected Area
Use a clean towel or paper towel to blot any spots where the stain has spread.
If instead of blotting the stain, you scrub the cover, you could cause more of the urine stain to spread across the cover.
Step 3: Spray Hydrogen Peroxide
Spray hydrogen peroxide all over the stain. Allow it to sit for half an hour or however long it takes for your washing machine to finish cleaning your sheets.
Step 4: Throw It Into the Washer
Put the mattress cover into the washer. Make sure to use cold water only. Otherwise, the fabric may shrink. If you want to use the dryer, choose the lowest heat setting.
